In the Men’s Amateur, Josh Gliege maintained his 1st place position wire-to-wire through 54 holes of competition. Things did get interesting after the front nine of the final round when John Baranco, who was in fourth place after 36 holes, made 5 birdies to shoot 31 and go 6 deep giving him a 1 shot lead over Gliege. In an effort to answer back at the turn, Gliege birdied holes 11 and 13 with an eagle in between on hole 12 to ensure his path toward the title. When asked what was going through his head heading into the back nine, Gliege said, “I was just trying to keep making as many birdies as I could. I knew Skyler would [go low] so I was basically playing match play with him at that point.” Gliege had an incredibly successful and consistent three days at the State Amateur shooting scores of 67-67-67 = 201 (-15).
Tied for second after the 18th green, Alex Talbot and Skylar Eubank were 12-under and headed to a sudden-death playoff. Talbot birdied 18 to force the playoff against Eubank. On the first hole, Eubank and Talbot parred, extending the playoff. On hole 11, Eubank snagged the win by eagling the par 5 to defeat Talbot’s birdie. Finishing in third, Talbot had a stellar final day with a total of 8 birdies en route to a three day total of 69-69-66 = 204 (-12). Eubank also had an incredible three days shooting scores of 68-66-70 = 204 (-12).
